† OOTD + Makeup | Casting Call

Hello ! This article may come as a surprise, but isn’t that the whole point ? Something different to break from the usual things that have been done again and again. Far be it from me to bite the hand that feeds me, but I get that turotials can be a little redundant. Anyway, I’ve been asked many about how to become a model, how to do it, how to be taken seriously, and most of all, how to actually get in that very restrictive, yet sought after world. So here I am, humbly trying to shed some light on this question in this article. I’ll try to guide you as best I can, using my personnal experience in the matter.

In France, you only have a real status -legally- as a model if you’re enrolled in an agency (such as but not limited to Elite, IMG, Next or Ford). Outside of these agencies you’re considered a photo model, and therefore not entitled to compensation, since there is not technically a legal status for that. For that reason, my first advice is to seek out those agencies, you can find an exhaustive list of all agencies -French and otherwise- on the Mannequinat.fr website. You can get in touch with an agency either via their websites our via e-mail. You’ll most likely be asked to join polaroid-type pictures to your application, which means the natural you.

Beside that, you’ll need to seek out photographers -and be ready to pay them!- and/or partake in castings in order to create your Portfolio. To that end you can use the Casting.fr -it’s a french website, so there’s only jobs in France- website which only pusblishes paid castings. You can also simply use social medias such as Facebook to find castings -with no assurance that you will be paid. Here is, to me, the ideal outfit to wear for theses events -and by that I mean the castings of course.

It’s a typical outfit, something that highlights your good features, and in which you’re comfortable. But it also reveals your silhouette from the first glance. A comfy sweater, normal shoes or sneakers, doesn’t matter as long as you’re comfortable in them, and a bag in which you can sneak heels -if you’re a girl- and your Portfolio if you already have one.

For the same reason as stated before, a black tank top is considered standard. It’ll make you look good and the jury can analyze your silhouette with a quick look. Concerning your book -if you have one, which is greatly advised- you can either use a paper-type one, or a digital one -2.0 haha. Here are some more pictures for you.

The final touch of your outfit should be heels! I know they’re hell for many, but it is absolutely necessary to know how to walk in them and, even more importantly to be comfortable in them in order to avoid any frown or funny faces if you’re asked to catwalk in order to analyze your gait. You don’t have to buy expensive ones, my heels are from Primark for instance. And make sure they’re neither too high nor too thin, and that they are comfortable !

I’ll wrap this whole outfit up with the makeup. Try to stay as natural as possible ! The perfect setup for a casting in my opinion is : concealer, mattifying powder, a little bit of contouring if like me you’re addicted to it and one pinch of mascara to open your gaze up. And that’s it.

  • Moisturizer Cream  : Celestial – Lush
  • Concealer : Lock it Concealer – Katvond Beauty (Neutral)
  • Mattifying Powder : Lock it Powder Foundation – Katvond Beauty (Light)
  • Contouring : Shade + Light – Katvond Beauty
    • Lyric + Levitation
    • Subconscious
  • Highlighter : Moon Child – Anastasia Beverly Hills (Pink Heart)
  • Blush : Afterglow – Urban Decay (Score)
  • Mascara : Better Than Sex – Too Faced

Before I finish this article I’d like to add something, you’ve most likely already heard it but I feel like I need to say it regardless. It is not an easy job. There are lots and lots of people in front and behind you who will jump on any chance to get in and stay in. You’ll probably partake in dozens, maybe hundreds, of castings before you finally sign your first contract. And you’ll undoubtedly suffer many refusals from agencies. But do not lose hope, keep faith because if this is truly your passion, your dream-job, then you will make it.

Stay true to yourselves, this is the most importan thing to do in this job, be yourself. Do not change who you are because some people don’t like you. You can change the way you look all you want, but you can’t change who you are. People can evolve, but changing altogether should never be seen as necessary or enticing. Don’t get cocky, don’t get big-headed. Remain joyful, smiling and keep listening to people.

I really hope those few lines can help you, and should you have any question I didn’t answer here, please do ask. The comment section is also good for that. I wish you the best ! Have a great week !
